Virtual Meet Announcement and Info.
Hello Tsunami Family!
We are elated to announce and confirm that we will be having our first swim meet of the season held virtually at Floyd County YMCA on Saturday, November 7th in the evening after the branch closes at 5:00 p.m. We are extremely appreciative to Northeast and Floyd County Y for working together and creating a safe and fun opportunity to allow our swimmers to challenge themselves and see what all their hard work in practices can do for them. The meet will run two separate sessions:
-First session will be 10 and under's
-Second session will be 11 and over's
-Warm ups for first session @ 4:30 pm
-Meet begins at 5:00 p.m.
-Floyd County YMCA address:
33 State St.
New Albany, IN
47150
We are still working on official times for each session as we gauge participation and will be providing you with more detailed information throughout this upcoming week with more meet details. We ask that you bare with us as putting together a swim meet for the first time during these times is, quite literally, navigating unchartered waters. But here's what we've got for you at this time!
*What is this meet and how does it work?:
-This is our annual Sprint Meet which is typically held at Telford YMCA.
-Events consist of 25's and 50's of each stroke and 100 IM's
-We unfortunately are unable to hold relays at this time.
-All teams in our league will be competing and logging their times virtually where results will be logged and delivered like any "normal functioning" meet.
*How are we making this work while being "Covid conscious"?:
-As much as we'd love to have all families involved, no parents will be allowed on deck (with the exception of volunteers) due to social distancing and capacity.
-All swimmers, coaches and volunteers must wear a mask upon entrance of the building and on deck (swimmers understandably so take masks of to swim and then resume mask wearing after their swim just as they do at practice). Please provide hour swimmer with a plastic bag to keep mask safe and clean while swimming.
-We will be live streaming the meet so you can still watch your swimmer's events despite not being able to be in the building or on deck. More information on that also to come.
-We will be providing markings on the deck to keep age groups and swimmers socially distanced and strategically lined up for events.
-Swimmers will exit out the front of the building after their session. There is a busy street between the Y and the parking lot so we will be providing safety measures to make sure swimmers and parents are met together safely!
-Sanitation of blocks, seating areas, etc.
*What do we need from you?:
-Sign you swimmer up for the meet on Swimtopia by midnight of November 4th. If they are not registered for this meet, they will not be entered for any events.
-We need volunteers!! This meet cannot happen without your help. We deeply appreciate the investment of your time and energy. Please sign up on Swimtopia.
-13timers (2 per lane plus one back up) are needed. It would be safest and most convenient to have adults from the same family volunteer together if possible.
-If you are a certified official, Neil Sandefur will be emailing you the information for your sign up.
-About 15 other volunteers to help with lining swimmers up, guiding swimmers with entering/exiting the building and helping enforce safety and respect for our Covid guidelines and for the Floyd County YMCA.
-Send swimmers with their typical swim gear: Dressed in their swimsuit, goggles, cap, towel/sweatshirts/sweatpants, a towel or blanket to sit on.
-We are not allowing the swimmers to bring chairs as space is limited with social distancing.
-We are keeping snacks to a strict minimum. We understand swimmers need their energy and fuel or specific snacks for dietary reasons. We ask that you please be mindful that our sessions will be much shorter than our average (estimated 2 hours).
-Please have conversations with your swimmers about the importance of following our carefully developed Covid guidelines and the leadership of the coaches and volunteers during this very different meet. We will be having chats with the kiddos at practice about what that means as well. This is a great opportunity for us to teach and put into practice some of most important Y core values: responsibility and respect. We can always try to find a way to bring confusing and hard times full circle for ourselves and more importantly, for our kids.
*Spirit wear reminder: Please make sure you have made the selection and turned in your spirit weae orders by 11:59 pm Saturday, October 31st as the site will close. There's some great stuff for swimmers and adults this year!
PLEASE feel free to email us coaches with any questions or concerns throughout this process. We appreciate the trust you have in us while working with your most precious commodities. Let's keep riding this strange wave together and safely!
With much excitement,
Coach Shannon and Coach Cavan
